Biography

Yutaka Sone (* 1965, Shizuoka, JP) is a contemporary artist best known for his paintings, sculptures, and installations. Throughout his practice, Sone combines urban and natural elements to examine societal traditions and question humanity’s shifting relationship to nature.  Sone studied architecture at the Tokyo University of Arts, thereby gaining an understanding of civic engineering that is evident in the artist’s well-known marble sculptures of city layouts. Transferal of cultural concepts onto natural materials and vice versa is a common thread through Sone's work, ranging from macroscopic snowflakes carved out of monumental crystals to images of palm trees painted on flags.
